SouthTech Success Stories

Nick Dent SouthTech Academy Class of '2016

By entering SouthTech’s Automotive Technology Academy as a freshman, Nick was able to start early in the automotive field. He earned a Valvoline Certification under Mr. Brown’s instruction, and later earned his FADA Certification with guidance from Mr. Martinez. Currently, Nick is the Transportation Coordinator for FLD, where he organizes efforts to remove commercial labeling and logos to prepare vehicles to be sold at auction. In the arena of professional development, he is working toward his Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification and attending Palm Beach State College for diesel repair. His message to current SouthTech students is to be kind, keep in touch with those who inspire you, and build your collection of personal and professional references.

Diana Betancourt, Cosmetology Student
Coming to SouthTech Academy was the best decision I’ve made! Once out of high school I will have a career! Being in the cosmetology program has not only provided me with many learning opportunities, but it has also given me hands-on experience. The teachers and the academy have made my SouthTech experience a great one!

SouthTech Culinary Students Excel in Service

Hi Chef O’Neil,
Your students provided excellent help at the private reception at Macy’s Boynton  Beach hosted for the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History.  Macy’s gifted each student with a $25 certificate.  Attached are some photos from the event.

Picture Jannely Lora, Class of 2010
Meet Jannely Lora, Class of 2010Growing up, I knew I always wanted a career that deals with food and making people happy. I never cared what the job was, whether it was food photography, food writing or even food design; I knew I had to do it! When I heard about SouthTech, and the opportunity that they gave to their students to work with two amazing chefs in a real commercial kitchen, I knew that this was the school for me. Attending SouthTech gave me the discipline, knowledge and the confirmation that I needed to know that this was the career choice for me. Working with Chef O’Neil, a Culinary Institute of America Alum, and learning about this amazing college she attended, and seeing the years of skills and knowledge she gained from it, and ultimately working in the real world, pushed me further into falling in love with my dream school. Working with Chef Tanner, who was my very first Master Pastry Chef I studied under, helped open my eyes into the world of baking and pastry, and this is what defines who I am today. Both chefs taught me the basics and much more in order to prepare myself for The Culinary Institute of America. They gave me my confidence that I needed to have,  and the understanding that with hard work, discipline, and respect to authority, that I am only capable of prominence, and that I make my future and determine where I end up. Graduating from The Culinary Institute of America  with my Associate in Professional Studies in Baking and Pastry Arts, and my Bachelors in Baking and Pastry Arts Management prepared me to the maximum with the knowledge that I needed to not only being more than capable in working in a kitchen, and also managing it, but to one day own one.  Both these schools are truly the best schools in America, and if I never attended SouthTech Academy High School, my success story would have never happened. During this present moment, right after graduating with my Bachelors on May 1, 2014, I went straight into the work field on May 5, 2014 working at the Four Seasons in Palm Beach, which was only possible from the help and connection from The Culinary Institute of America. In knowing myself so well, I know that this is just the first step into carving my future, and I am more than ready, confident, and excited to see how far I am going to take myself.

Sincerely,
Jannely Lora

Kelsie Kershaw, Class of 2014
Meet Kelsie Kershaw, Class of 2014:
She did it again!  Kellsie Kershaw, who graduated from South Tech Academy in Boynton Beach last May, brought home another gold medal in Practical Nursing from the 2014 SkillsUSA 50th Annual National Competition, held in Kansas City this past June.  Cathy Sweeney, Kellsie’s Medical Academy teacher and mentor, not only prepared her for both the 2013 and 2014 competitions, but accompanied Kellsie to the regional, state and the national contests both years.  Cathy knows how to prepare champions.  In 2010, another Medical Academy student, Sthanley Joseph won the national silver medal for practical nursing at Skills Nationals.  SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit student organization that serves students enrolled in career and technical education training programs at our nation’s public high schools and colleges.  Their mission is to empower its members to become world class workers and responsible American citizens. (Information taken from SkillsUSA website).
Winning her second gold medal at the Skills’ competition is only one of many accomplishments Kellsie has experienced this past year.   She also traveled to Sweden, accompanied by Mrs. Sweeney, to attend the International Symposium “Molecular Frontiers – The Brain”.  They were able to meet and converse with some of the Nobel laureates and other distinguished professionals from all over the world.  The Rotary Club of Boynton Beach sponsored this opportunity for Kellsie and Mrs. Sweeney.  She is only the second student from the United States to attend such a symposium.  Kellsie also placed second in the 2014 Pathfinder Scholarship Awards in the Reach for Excellence category, and more recently, was accepted in the first class to ever have direct admission into the Nursing College at Florida Atlantic University.
For her many successes, South Tech salutes Kellsie Kershaw!
